The Ultimate Homemade Mexican Enchilada Sauce: A Family Favorite
Hey, foodie friends! As a working mom living between the vibrant cultures of India and Malaysia, I’ve developed a knack for blending flavours from around the world to create something magical for my teenage daughter and me. Today, I’m thrilled to share a staple in our kitchen: my easy, authentic Mexican enchilada sauce recipe. Perfect for those bustling weeknights or a leisurely weekend cooking session, this sauce adds a kick to any meal!
A Peek into Our Love for Mexican Cuisine
Living in two diverse cultures, we’ve developed a palette that craves bold and authentic flavors, leading us to fall in love with Mexican cuisine. The heart of many Mexican dishes, for us, lies in the enchilada sauce. Whether it’s the vibrant red enchilada sauce or the tangy green enchilada sauce, each brings its unique zest and depth to dishes.
Crafting the Perfect Mexican Enchilada Sauce
The quest for the perfect enchilada sauce recipe ends here. Forget about the store-bought versions; nothing beats the rich, smoky flavor of homemade enchilada sauce. And guess what? It’s easier to make than you think!
Ingredients for Your New Go-To Sauce
• 2 cups tomato puree (or 1 can of tomato puree for a quick option)
• 1/4 cup vegetable oil (I find sunflower oil works wonders)
• 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for a gluten-free enchilada sauce, swap this with your preferred gluten-free flour)
• 2 tablespoons red chili powder (Mexican chili powder adds that authentic kick)
• 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
• 1 1/2 cups of water
• Salt to taste
The Magic Happens Here: Step-by-Step
1. Heat the Oil: In a saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Make sure it’s hot enough to sizzle a bit of flour.
2. Whisk in the Flour and Chili Powder: Add the flour and chili powder to the hot oil. Whisk continuously to combine them into a smooth, roux-like mixture. This is where the sauce starts to get its color and thickening base.
3. Add the Tomato Puree: Slowly pour in the tomato puree while continuously whisking to ensure it blends well with the roux. This prevents lumps and ensures a silky texture.
4. Season and Simmer: Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. Then, gradually add the water until you reach your desired consistency. Let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will thicken and the flavors will meld beautifully.
Customizing Your Mexican Enchilada Sauce
The beauty of this enchilada sauce recipe lies in its versatility. Want a vegan enchilada sauce? Just ensure your tomato puree and flour are plant-based. Craving a mild enchilada sauce? Adjust the chili powder to suit your heat preference. And for those interested in a specific flavor profile, feel free to add enchilada sauce with roasted peppers or substitute the water with vegetable broth for an extra layer of taste.
Serving Suggestions: Beyond Enchiladas
While enchilada sauce is a staple for traditional Mexican dishes, its use doesn’t stop there. Drizzle it over scrambled eggs for a spicy breakfast or mix it into a casserole for a quick dinner fix. My daughter loves it when I use it as a pizza base sauce for a Mexican-inspired pizza night!
From Our Kitchen to Yours
Embracing the flavours of Mexico while incorporating the ease required by our busy lives has led to the creation of this all-time favourite enchilada sauce. It’s become more than just a recipe; it’s a tradition that brings our family together, no matter where we are in the world.
